5 Rewarding Counseling Careers Worth Considering

While the basic reasons why many pursue careers in counseling are generally similar, such as helping people, challenging yourself, and having financial stability, the types of counseling vary greatly from one to another.

Some counselors work primarily with large groups, some work with small groups, such as family counselors, and most work with individuals, on mental health issues.

This list is not exhaustive, and depending on who you ask, there are about 100 different careers for counselors, but almost all of them fall into line with one of these five types of counseling careers:

1. Marriage and Family Counseling

Marriage and family counseling can be quite intense as there are discussions about issues like domestic violence and child abuse, but with that intensity comes a lot to be proud of as family counselors have often been the main reason families stay together and children grow up in a happy family.

There is also a lot of fun in marriage and family counseling, especially if you like young people. And not all couples who go into therapy have issues, so you can build great relationships with people that will legitimately last a lifetime if you think you’d like to.

And, unlike other jobs on this list, marriage counselors make very good money!

2. Drug Abuse Counseling

Another counseling job that really helps save lives, substance abuse counselors help individuals and groups overcome their addictions and get rid of their vices.

Understanding the behaviors that lead these individuals to addiction is just as important as discussing the substances themselves.

Like family therapy, lifelong relationships can be formed with clients who depend on their counselors to help them stay clean.

Some individuals who seek substance abuse help do so under the direction of a judge, so one also needs to know how to deal with uncooperative clients from time to time.

3. Career guidance

Career counselors are the ones most of us have seen at some point in our lives. Whether the office is in a school or university, a corporate environment, or a career counseling firm, the work is much the same.

Listen and learn what individuals have to say about their passions and goals, and help them find a career path that will bring them happiness and self-esteem.

Within the field, counselors may choose to work with youth, middle-aged people, or even adults seeking a fresh start for a number of reasons that sometimes overlap with things like substance abuse counseling or marriage.

4. Housing assistance

Residential counselors usually work for local authorities in a social work capacity, although other jobs exist in this field. These counselors generally work in places where many people need the same counseling, such as substance abuse centers or retirement homes.

Many residential counselors live on site and can be reached almost all day. There is, of course, some good and bad in that, and it must be weighed up before choosing this path.

5. Youth Guidance

As the name suggests, youth counselors primarily work with young people to help them overcome the challenges posed by their family life, school treatments, or their own mental health issues.

In addition to the children, youth counselors work closely with patients’ families to ensure treatment is streamlined both at home and during counseling sessions.

Jobs in youth care are available for both group and individual institutions.

Take

All of these jobs are unfillable, and most of them allow for crossover if you pick one and realize you’ve made a mistake!
